Six ways in which young researchers can make the most of academic conferences

Some budding researchers who have never attended an academic conference may think that the only objective in attending an academic conference is to present one’s research. However, a researcher can get more out of an academic conference than simply presenting their work, and it is an excellent platform for career development.

There are six ways in which young researchers can take advantage of the benefits of academic conferences.

1. Take the conference as an opportunity to improve research quality

An academic conference is information-driven, as it is packed with many presentations by renowned scholars. Most researchers have to wait for a couple of months to see their final draft published in a journal. However, academic conferences readily accept research work that presents recent findings in the relevant field of study. In other words, academic conferences showcase emerging trends in a field of study before journals typically can.

Academic conferences ultimately aim to strengthen the quality of the research work involved.

2. Consider the conference as a venue for networking

Academic conferences offer invaluable opportunities for information exchange, meeting with prestigious researchers, and networking, as well as research presentations. Conferences allow participants to interact with researchers from a wide variety of regions and countries.

Presentations act as advertising billboards in which researchers present innovative ideas. Academic conferences are wonderful events that allow attendees to have conversations with esteemed researchers outside one’s own lab.

3. Keep contact after the end of an academic event

Most conference attendees can continue communicating even after the conference, particularly with the Internet and email, which are perfect tools for contacting authors who presented high-quality papers at the conference.

4. Keep materials from the conference

Most academic conference organizers publish a set of proceedings, which is a book of abstracts submitted at the conference. This booklet is an official souvenir of the conference, and all participants receive this document at the end of the conference. The conference proceedings may be provided as a hard copy or in a digital format. This collection of abstracts reflects the latest research trends in your field of study, and it should be considered extremely valuable.

5. Be diligent in securing subsidies for conference participation

Many universities also sponsor academic conferences. Some researchers who are just beginning their research journey may also receive travel grants for international events.

To avail oneself of subsidies and grants, a researcher should never hesitate to contact the conference organizers directly. Moreover, they can access university grants by contacting their program coordinator, research supervisor, or the HR department of their institution.

Attending an academic conference is a golden opportunity, and a lack of funds should never stop a researcher from attempting to attend a conference of interest. For example, students are often hired by conference organizers to work as volunteers at the conference; these volunteers can attend the conference without paying registration fees.

6. Know conference participants in advance

Graduate students and young researchers should socialize through the conference app and get to know the researchers living near the conference venue.

They can then inquire if these researchers are willing to accommodate them at their houses or if researchers are willing to share accommodations at hotels. The cost of accommodation can be covered by taking these initiatives, among others.

Young researchers attending an academic conference for the first time must spend some time familiarizing themselves with the list of participants posted on the conference website or app. This will boost their morale and reduce their fear of conversing with unknown researchers.

Harrisco is a top academic editing company in Seoul, South Korea. It has been organizing IKNC, an academic conference covering a variety of topics, since 2017. In August of this year, Harrisco hosted the 3rd IKNC conference in Jeongseon, Gangwon-do.

A strict review committee will monitor the quality of the papers presented at the conference. All conference abstracts will be published as conference proceedings by Harrisco. A few selected papers of sufficiently high quality for publication will be first polished by Harrisco’s native English editors, then published in their entirety in SCI journals that participated in the conference.

More information on the IKNC conference can be found on the IKNC website (www.iknc.org).
